Jury statement

The visual language of Lynn Gerstmair emerges from the engagement with both digital media, such as photography and film, and traditional analog media, such as textiles or printmaking. In some works, handwoven Jacquard fabric meets digital photography, with which the artist, for example, prints on unwoven warp threads. The result is a manually composed image that appears distorted, much like what we commonly encounter in digital image editing today. It is not only this innovative combination and exploration of techniques that convinced the jury, but also the almost philosophical approach with which Lynn Gerstmair addresses the theme of time.

The artist intensively engages with living beings and their finite time. A 29-part wall work depicts a bird, whose image gradually becomes lighter and completely dissolves towards the end of the series. What at first glance appears to be a seemingly experimental print reveals itself as a profound reflection on species extinction. The title reveals that the bird in question is the last passenger pigeon, which died in the zoo in 1914 as the last of its kind. The passenger pigeon also marked the beginning of a discussion about species extinction, which continues to this day. The technique Lynn Gerstmair uses here is tailored to the subject, allowing the artist to capture the bird and its extinction with sensitivity.
The need for the viewer to closely examine Lynn Gerstmair's works is also illustrated by the video projection Die Wartenden (»The Waiting People«). The video is projected onto glass and shows a bus stop where people are waiting. What initially appears to be people turns out to be an empty space; only the imprints of the once waiting individuals remain on the glass. This work highlights the artist's keen sensitivity to technique and the situation depicted. Lynn Gerstmair succeeds in capturing fleeting moments in her works and, through various media, analyzes the fragile passing of time.
