Jury statement

Bubu Mosiashvili's artistic practice is compelling in its complexity and multifaceted nature. Through performative walks, installations, and experimental publications that accompany his walks, he interrogates public space, uncovering its hidden history and the power structures embedded within it. For Mosiashvili, walking as an artistic practice is an inherently reflexive and automatic process that allows the body to take on the role of an attentive observer. By accompanying his walks with research in archives and using the found material for his installations and publications, he approaches public space on multiple levels, appropriating it in various ways.

In works such as »Steps through stories #3« – a performative walk – and »stories make worlds, worlds make stories« – a series of posters in public space, where he overwrites archival documents – he focuses, for example, on the 28 Heerstraßen (army roads) in Bremen, which were renamed in 1914 as a form of »silent propaganda« for the war. These works bring the military origin of today's street names to consciousness while also questioning the act of renaming itself. Naming is a political act, a demonstration of power, and a tool for maintaining societal narratives. In this sense, names are deeply rooted mechanisms that serve to shape social stories, weave history together, and influence collective perception. Alongside the (re)appropriation of public space, the uncovering and remembrance of the narratives inscribed in the urban landscape, and the making visible and experiential of the power structures inherent in them, Mosiashvili's works also reflect on the power of language, which, under current social conditions, must continually be critically examined.
