Federal Prize for Art Students

27th Federal Competition of the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth 2025

The Federal Prize for Art Students aims to showcase the diversity of education and artistic positions at Germany’s art academies. It specifically supports outstanding students and enables them to gain professional exhibition experience, present their work to a broad public, and establish contacts within the art world. All 25 academies, colleges, and universities represented in the Conference of Universities of the Arts (KHK) participate in the competition and each nominate two of their students or student teams. From the nominees, an independent expert jury selects up to eight award winners based on their portfolios.

The jury of the 27th Federal Competition consists of:

Stefanie Kleefeld
Director of Kunstverein Bremerhaven
Renan Laru-an
Theorist and curator of the Philippine Pavilion, Venice Biennale of Architecture 2025
Dr. Florence Thurmes
General Director of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz

The Federal Prize for Art Students is endowed with a total prize money of 30.000 euros. Additionally, a production grant totaling 18.000 euros supports the students in creating works specifically for the exhibition. The competition began in 1983 and has been held every two years since – this year marks its 27th edition. The competition is jointly organized by three institutions: the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth funds the competition, the German National Association for Student Affairs organizes and coordinates it, and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn hosts the exhibition of the prize winners. Until 2015, the competition was titled »Art Students Exhibit«. It was restructured at the initiative of the participating art schools and renamed the Federal Prize for Art Students. Since then, the exhibition has been exclusively reserved for the prize recipients.

Eligible to participate are the 25 academies, colleges, and universities represented in The Rectors' Conference of Art Universities:

Catalog

A catalog is published for each competition, documenting the artistic work of the award winners. The catalog, along with other competition media, is designed by one of the participating art academies. For the 27th Federal Competition, this task is being undertaken by Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle.

The catalog will be released at the exhibition opening on November 6, 2025, and will be available for purchase at the Walther König Bookstore located at the Bundeskunsthalle until the end of the exhibition on January 4, 2026. Additionally, you can order the catalog from the German National Association for Student Affairs, as well as catalogs from previous editions of the competition.
